It is based upon a real historical incident and a genuine perennial threat to life and property in the Medway towns of Kent in England. The US explosives carrier Liberty-Ship Richard Montgomery sank in the Thames Estuary in August 1944. It was loaded with explosives and the British Admiralty decided to leave the wreck and its dangerous cargo undisturbed.
